New York Yankees Claim Veteran Starting Pitcher From Mariners
The New York Yankees have added to their pitching depth.
On Tuesday, the Yankees claimed starting pitcher Luke Weaver off waivers from the Seattle Mariners.
The Yankees recently announced that both Luis Severino and Nestor Cortes Jr. were out for the season, so adding Weaver solidifies their starting rotation depth. New York moved Cortes Jr. to the 60-day injured list to make room on the 40-man roster for Weaver.
Weaver, who pitched for the Cincinnati Reds and Mariners this season, posted a 6.77 ERA across 110.1 innings in 22 starts and four relief appearances. It's unclear whether the Yankees are going to use him as a starter or reliever the rest of the way.
Weaver, 30, was a former first-round pick in the 2014 MLB Draft. Unfortunately, he has not lived up to expectations, posting a career 26-41 record and 5.18 ERA in 141 games.
