The New York Yankees are bringing back a familiar face.

On Thursday, the Yankees re-signed right-handed starting pitcher Luke Weaver to a one-year, $2 million deal with a club option for 2025. The deal can also max out at $8.25 million.

MLB insider Robert Murray of Fansided was first to report on this news.

Weaver, 30, made three starts for the Yankees last season, going 1-1 with a 3.38 ERA in 13.1 innings. In addition to the Yankees, Weaver also pitched for the Seattle Mariners and Cincinnati Reds in 2023, posting a 6.40 ERA in 25 starts and 29 appearances.

For his career, Weaver has a 5.14 ERA in 574.1 innings, 106 starts and 144 appearances overall.

Weaver does have some upside, as he averages 94 mph on his fastball. He also added a cutter last season, which Yankees pitching coach Matt Blake was very intrigued in. The Yankees had Weaver throw his cutter a ton when he joined them in September, and he certainly saw positive results.

By adding Weaver, the Yankees are continuing to build out their starting pitching depth. The likely scenario is that Weaver will be a starter at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre until he is needed at the big-league level. But the Yankees clearly believe they can unlock his potential with his new-found cutter.
