Yankees’ Anthony Volpe Hits First Career Grand Slam

Yankees rookie shortstop Anthony Volpe hit his first career grand slam on Wednesday.

Although he wasn’t getting results, Anthony Volpe was consistently hitting the ball hard in his at-bats. Against the Oakland Athletics, the results began to show.

On Tuesday, Volpe hit an eighth inning triple, which broke an 0-for-17 slump despite having high exit velocities on each ball he put in play that night.

On Wednesday, Volpe came up with the bases loaded and two outs, with the Yankees ahead 7-2 and three runs already in. Facing Athletics reliever Rico Garcia, the 22-year old jumped at the first pitch he saw and did this:

In the process, Volpe became the third youngest Yankee to hit a grand slam (only behind Mickey Mantle and Melky Cabrera), and the youngest to hit one in any version of Yankee Stadium (Mantle and Cabrera’s grand slams came on the road).

It took Volpe just three career at-bats with the bases loaded to hit his first grand slam, and he’s currently 3-for-3 with the home run, seven RBI, and a walk in such scenarios.

The grand slam extended New York’s lead to 11-2, and they went on to win, 11-3, completing a three-game sweep of the Athletics.
