The New York Yankees may have some tough decisions to make this upcoming offseason.

New York seemed poised to compete for a World Series title this season but the 2023 campaign hasn't gone as planned so far. The Yankees currently are in last place in the American League East with a 59-56 record and are five-and-a-half games out of a Wild Card spot. While injuries have played a major role in the Yankees' inconsistent season, there could be changes coming. It sounds like general manager Brian Cashman isn't going anywhere but the same may not be the case for manager Aaron Boone, according to NewJersey.com's Bob Klapisch.

"Boone’s fate is less certain, in part because he has only one year remaining on his contract," Klapisch said. "That, and the Yankees’ lackluster play throughout the 2023 season, have left Steinbrenner “deeply frustrated,” according to that same person with knowledge of Steinbrenner’s thinking. In May, when asked what it would take to fire Boone, Steinbrenner said, 'I think one of the most important things for me is he has the respect of the players. They want to play for him and they want to win for him. And if I saw that disappear, then I make a change.'

"A month later, he sounded a warning: 'If we don’t make the playoffs and we’re healthy the second half of the year and we start getting guys back and we get the team that we intended to be on the field, then I’m going to be asking some tough questions.'"

Boone joined the Yankees as the club's manager ahead of the 2018 season. The 50-year-old became the first manager in Major League Baseball history to win 100 or more games in each of his first two seasons. The Yankees have made the playoffs each season under Boone so far but have yet to make a World Series. The Yankees have a club option with Boone for the 2025 campaign.
