Yankees Mentioned As Landing Spot For Brewers Star In Possible Surprise Trade

Should the Yankees pursue the Brewers star in a possible blockbuster deal?

The New York Yankees have been linked in some way to seemingly every star available this offseason.

New York had a down year in 2023 and is looking for ways to improve the club. The Yankees have shown this offseason they are willing to spend big as they look to make it back to the postseason in 2024.

The Yankees have made a handful of intriguing moves but have been linked to many other players as well. At this point in the offseason, it would be surprising to see New York make another major move with Spring Training right around the corner.

While this is the case, Bleacher Report's Zachary Rymer mentioned the Yankees as a possible suitor for Milwaukee Brewers star Devin Williams in his list of hypothetical "win-win" trades before Spring Training.

"Trade Proposal: New York Yankees get (right-handed pitcher) Devin Williams; Milwaukee Brewers get (right-handed pitcher) Chase Hampton (No. 2 New York prospect, No. 76 MLB prospect), (outfield) Brando Mayea (No. 10 New York prospect)," Rymer said. "The Yankees reportedly shifted their focus to bullpen upgrades after signing Marcus Stroman, and you can still squint and see an opening for a late-inning type even after the deal that brought back (Caleb Ferguson) on Monday.

"To this end, the biggest possible fish isn't (Kenley Jansen) or even (Emmanuel Clase). It's Williams. Him and his 'Airbender' would seem to be available, as Brewers (general manager) Matt Arnold is open to more trade conversations after moving (Corbin Burnes)."

Milwaukee recently traded superstar Corbin Burnes away so it wouldn't be too surprising to see the club follow suit by dealing Williams. He is one of the best relievers in baseball and has a career 1.89 ERA in five seasons with the Brewers to go along with two Trevor Hoffman National League Reliever of the Year Awards.

It still would be surprising to see New York swing another major trade. Not to say it couldn't happen, but it should be considered unlikely.
