Yankees Reportedly Could Sign Cy Young Award Front-Runner In Much-Needed Off-Season Move

New York reportedly could land one of the best pitchers in baseball this offseason

Who will take the mound for the New York Yankees in 2024?

This question already has been floated on multiple occasions. New York already has Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodón and there are some internal candidates to help fill out the rest of the rotation. Although this is the case, New York will likely add at least one hurler in free agency or through trade. The Yankees even have been listed as one of the best fits to land San Diego Padres star Blake Snell, according to The Athletic's Jim Bowden.

"Blake Snell is the front-runner to win the (National League) Cy Young Award after a special season in which he went 14-9 with a 2.25 ERA and 234 strikeouts over 32 starts," Bowden said. "He didn't allow a run in five of his last six starts. Snell ranked in the 100th percentile in pitching run value and breaking run value. Opposing batters hit just .079 against his curveball, .185 against his changeup, and .123 against his slider...

"Best fits: (St. Louis Cardinals), Red Sox, (New York Yankees), (San Francisco Giants), (Los Angeles Dodgers), and (San Diego Padres). Contract prediction: five years, $122 million."

New York will have competition -- possibly even the rival Boston Red Sox -- but a move makes sense. Snell is in line to win his second Cy Young Award and would form a fearsome duo with Cole. Plus, if New York could land him for the contract Bowden predicted, he would be a steal. The Yankees need to make at least one -- but probably multiple big moves this offseason if they want to get back into World Series contention.

The Yankees won 82 games in 2023 and have room for growth. Landing someone like Snell would be a perfect place to start.
