Yankees Reportedly May Trade Slugger This Offseason Despite Stellar Season

One Yankees star could have played his last game in New York

The New York Yankees may end up dealing some players away this offseason.

After winning just 82 games in 2023, a lot of work needs to be done. New York already has said it is going to take a long, hard look at the organization itself and make changes this offseason. The Yankees are in an interesting spot. New York has talent but injuries and inconsistent play ruined the season. The club will be busy this offseason looking to add more talent to the roster but with a massive payroll already on their hands, they need to make a few trades this offseason.

One player who reportedly could find himself playing elsewhere in 2024 could end up being star second baseman Gleyber Torres, according to MLB.com's Bryan Hoch.

"The Yankees are not interested in trading (Oswald Peraza), but their crowded infield creates a puzzle: (D.J. LeMahieu) will get at-bats at first base, second base, and third base, Anthony Volpe is returning as the starting shortstop, and Gleyber Torres remains the starting second baseman.

"The Yankees could conceivably bring Peraza into camp as a rover at second base, third base, or shortstop, though a Torres trade remains on the table. Torres is arbitration eligible and would be looking at a raise over the $9.95 million he earned this past year; if Hal Steinbrenner is serious about having Volpe and Peraza as the future of the middle infield, as he’s said, then this might be the time to move Torres."

Dealing away Torres could make some sense. The Yankees have young, cost-effective infield depth and could save money by trading away the two-time All-Star. Although he was one of the best offensive second basemen in baseball in 2023, a move could make sense because the Yankees could use the money elsewhere. New York has been linked to star outfielders Cody Bellinger and Juan Soto and either would give the team a clear upgrade. Plus, the club has been linked to Orix Buffaloes ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto.

At this point, it wouldn't be too surprising to see Torres traded in the not-so-distant future.
