Yankees Reportedly Targeting Star Pitcher This Offseason In Free Agency In Possible Reunion

Could the Yankees actually land the Rangers star this offseason?

The New York Yankees are looking to make some big additions this offseason.

New York won just 82 games last season despite entering the season with sky-high expectations. The Yankees at one point were among the favorites to win the 2023 World Series but injuries and inconsistent play ruined the season.

The Yankees' biggest roster needs are in the starting rotation and the middle of the lineup. New York had one of the worst offenses in baseball last season but with better health should improve plus it wouldn't hurt to make an addition or two. The Yankees already have been linked to multiple starting pitchers this offseason and it sounds like they may be looking into a reunion with Jordan Montgomery, according to the New York Post's Jon Heyman.

"The Yankees have been particular about rotation targets, looking at Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Jordan Montgomery but not some others," Heyman said. "The Yankees are, however, on Frankie Montas."

Montgomery would be a major addition for the Yankees. He is just 30 years old and had arguably the best season of his career in 2024. Montgomery made 32 starts with the St. Louis Cardinals and Texas Rangers and compiled a 3.20 ERA across 188 2/3 innings pitched. Plus, he was impressive for the Rangers on their way to win the 2023 World Series.

If the Yankees can pair Montgomery with Gerrit Cole, that would be a great place to start. New York needs to make bold moves this offseason and bringing Montgomery back could be a great place to start.
