2023 NBA Draft Team Recap: New York Knicks

Taking a look at the draft haul for the New York Knicks in the 2023 NBA Draft.

Perhaps no team has stayed more status quo with their roster this offseason than the New York Knicks.

The only notable moving parts was the trade of Obi Toppin to the Indiana Pacers for two future second-round picks and the free agent signing of Donte DiVincenzo from the Golden State Warriors on a four-year deal. Not only did the Knicks not have a first-round pick - due to the mid season trade for Josh Hart from the Portland Trail Blazers which turned into pick No. 23 and Kris Murray - but they also did not have a second-round selection.

Furthermore, the Knicks most notable UDFA addition was Jaylen Martin who they signed to a two-way contract and had a solid performance at NBA Summer League.

In his three games in Las Vegas, the Overtime Elite product averaged 13 points per game on 41% from the field and over three assists. It is also noteworthy that he got to the free throw line five times per game.

While the Knicks roster has plenty of talent in their early to mid twenties, Martin is the sole addition from this 2023 NBA Draft. Depending on the path that Leon Rose chooses to take - there are rumblings they have a major move in mind for the future - that could change drastically over future drafts.

Because of the Dallas Mavericks' late season losing to keep their own pick in 2023 - a pick that was close to conveying and could have yielded sharpshooters Gradey Dick or Jordan Hawkins - they still owe that pick to the Knicks with the same protections for the next two seasons.

New York also owns a heavily protected Detroit Pistons draft pick that now starts to have decreasing protections and becomes much more realistic a couple years from now. The same is true for a Washington Wizards pick that has slightly less protections, but still would seem to stay with the Wizards for the next couple of seasons as they rebuild.

On top of all of these the Knicks control all of their own future first-round picks and have a 2025 top-four protected Milwaukee Bucks pick that is at least slightly interesting with an aging Bucks team.

Regardless of the path Rose takes moving forward, the Knicks will be a major player in future NBA Drafts whether they are making the selections or have traded their collection of picks on to a team with a star that is ready for a new start.
