2024 NBA Draft Prospect Team Previews: KK Mega Basket
Nikola Djurisic may have been the more recognizable NBA Draft name for KK Mega Basket coming into the season due to his 2023 NBA Draft buzz. But Nikola Topic is quickly supplanting him for the teams top 2024 NBA Draft prospect.
Topic is a 6-foot-5 true point guard or primary initiator.
Having just turned 18-years-old in August and playing in a professional league makes his command of the court on the offensive end that much more impressive.
While he may not possess the most athletic profile, that does not slow him down from constantly putting pressure on the defense and consistently penetrating into the lane.
Topic does this most effectively when operating in ball screens where he shows real craft and nuance in the way he attacks the defense.
His isolation game is a tad limited due to the lack of explosiveness but his ability to change pace and his slower and more methodical style works well for him.
That craftiness carries over to how he gets his buckets around the rim and his willingness to play through contact and ability to finish with his left hand add to his efficiency.
Topic shot 55% overall in all of his games last year and is over 64% through two games this season while averaging 26.5 points per game.
Right now, the jump shot looks just good enough to make teams respect it. He was right at 37% on 3.5 attempts last season but is just 3-of-10 so far this year.
The stat that gives his shot more long term promise is actually the free throw percentage where he has consistently been somewhere in the 80% range for the entirety of his young career.
Topic is a very good passer but something to keep an eye on is the amount of turnovers he commits each game.
Through the two games this season he already has 12.
Overall, the offensive sale for Topic is pretty clear cut but the defensive end will leave you wanting more.
He is young and showcased some nice rotational box outs and even verticality contests at the rim but the awareness and energy expended on this part of the game must improve.
While Topic has stolen the attention of many NBA Draft scouts, Djurisic is still very much on their 2024 radar.
The almost 15 points per game through two games is good to see but it is the 4-of-10 from beyond the arc that is most important for the 19-year-old to continue.
Djurisic has always been pegged as a big, wing shooter - and make no mistake that the jump shot does look good - but the numbers have not always backed that up in the past.
If he can maintain the hot shooting start throughout the season and combine that with his plus positional passing he provides a very intriguing offensive prospect.
While this offensive impact will be his calling card he still must find a way to at least become a net neutral defensively and specifically eliminate the possessions where he allows a blow by to then reach around from behind the driver.
The combination of Topic and Djurisic make KK Mega Basket a must team to follow throughout the 2024 NBA Draft process.
