Victor Wembanyama is Proving There is no Ceiling

Victor Wembanyama has shattered already-high expectations for the season.

On Friday night, we saw what was likely the best game of Victor Wembanyama’s young career: a 5x5 featuring 27 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists and five steals and blocks apiece against the Lakers.

The performance came near-24 hours after a missing out on a 5x5 against the Kings the night before, finishing just one assist shy of the legendary mark. Wembanyama was just the 15th player to earn the achievement in league history, with Jusuf Nurkic last accomplishing the feat in 2019.

I feel we need to take a second to let that sink in.

It’s been a literal half-decade since the last time a player managed to pull it off. And a 20-year-old rookie was one assist away from doing it on the front and back end of a back-to-back.

Suffice to say, contests like Thursday and Friday’s — in addition to plenty of others — are already proving there’s truly no ceiling or limit to what Wembanyama can become.

The French phenom has already shattered sky-high expectations set for him in the preseason.

Initially the efficiency wasn’t there, but the reigning LNB Pro A MVP was still able to put up gaudy stat lines each night.

After San Antonio moved him to center, all concerns evaporated. And we were left with something closer to an All-Star, in addition to his eventual Rookie of the Year-level play.

On the season, Wembanyama is now averaging 20.6 points, 10.1 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 3.3 blocks and 1.3 steals per game while shooting 46.6% overall and 31.8% from beyond the arc.

The Spurs and Wembanyama are back in action at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 25 against the Jazz.
