Tyler Kolek, Marquette

Prospect Profile

A natural lead guard that plays with a chip on his shoulder, Kolek embodies a winning player. Though he might be limited in some parts of the game, he’s an incredible passer that can also space the floor and score when needed. When it comes to efficiency and productivity, there’s few players better than Kolek at the college level.

Kolek has really developed in three years at Marquette following his freshman campaign at George Mason. Standing at 6-foot-3, he’s a crafty offensive weapon who has a good feel for when his team needs him to score or facilitate for others.

In fact, Kolek is one of the best passers in the country. For the second consecutive season, he’s hovered near the top of the Division I leaderboard for most assists generated. On any given night, he can produce a double-double with points and dimes. In the last two seasons alone, he’s recorded multiple games with 15 or more assists. More importantly, he also takes good care of the ball and makes good decisions.

When he isn’t facilitating for his teammates and enhancing the offense with his point guard skillset, Kolek is a capable scorer as well. In fact, he’s arguably been Marquette’s most reliable scorer this season. A quality 3-point and free throw shooter, everything about his complimentary scoring upside seems very translatable at the next level.

On the defensive end, Kolek is limited both physically and as an athlete, but processes the game quickly and understands how to play within a scheme. He’s the ultimate competitor and always gives maximum effort, which makes up for some of these deficiencies. In either case, that side of the floor will be what teams really evaluate when making a decision on where he lands on their boards leading up to draft night.

When it comes down to it, Kolek is a proven winner that plays his best when it matters most. He’s a decorated collegiate athlete, with honors including Big East Player of the Year, Big East Tournament MVP, along with being on several watchlists for player of the year nationally. It’s easy to see a scenario in which he becomes a quality backup point guard that plays many years at the NBA level.

The former 2019 Rhode Island Gatorade Player of the Year has developed into a legitimate NBA talent. Despite being 23 years old on draft night, Kolek is well worth a pick.
