Prospect Profile

After playing his freshman and sophomore seasons at Lawson State Community College, Woolbright transferred to Western Carolina and has now developed into an NBA talent in three seasons there. A guard with good size averaging a double-double, Woolbright possesses a unique blend of size, strength and fluidity.

The interesting thing about Woolbright is his role and what he’s asked to do. The lefty plays on a team that has several small guards in the rotation, which requires him to play bigger than most guards. He’s been great at this, which is evident in his rebounding production. The 6-foot-6 prospect is one of the best rebounders in the country, irrespective of position on the floor.

Woolbright isn’t the quickest or most athletic prospect, but knows how to play bully ball. He’s great with the ball in his hands and can exploit smaller defenders by backing them down or powering through them when driving. The vast majority of his shots come right around the rim, where he’s a crazy and effective finisher. The big knock on Woolbright is the fact that he’s not a reliable jump shooter from any range, especially from beyond the arc. He is also an inconsistent free throw shooter, which is something NBA teams will have to consider in their evaluation. If he’s not within six to eight feet of the rim, he’s not the most effective. Even then, he’s found ways to be a phenomenal scorer despite being somewhat one-dimensional.

Not only does Woolbright have to play a lot of frontcourt minutes given his team’s roster composition, but he’s also Western Carolina’s best passer and facilitator — by far. He produces a solid number of assists and has the ball in his hands a lot offensively.

It’s worth noting, Woolbright will be 24 years old at the start of the next NBA season. Even then, he could be a big riser in pre-draft process when teams can get a good look at him against better competition. As a player that can do quite a bit on the floor, he could carve out a decent role as a rookie in the right system.
