Celtics Legend Criticizes Marcus Smart as Point Guard

Celtics legend Bob Cousy liked Smart as a player, but not as a point guard.

Marcus Smart isn't the most traditional point guard in the NBA, but no one can deny that he's effective. It created a polarizing dynamic among Celtics fans, even ones that are former players like NBA legend Bob Cousy.

Bob Cousy spoke with Dan Shaughnessy of the Boston Globe where he discussed the highly unexpected Marcus Smart trade that happened less than a week ago.

“I liked Smart,” Cousy said. “I didn’t like some of the things he did. He thought he was a point guard when he was not. His mind was more to create opportunities for himself. In my judgment, point guards have to come across midcourt thinking, ‘How am I going to set one of the other guys up?’ That was never his thing.”

While Cousy may not have been a fan of Smart as a point guard, he was still a big fan of him as a player. He fully understands that Smart did so many little things for the Celtics and consistently contribute to winning plays. So much so, that Cousy may not have wanted to let Smart go.

“But with that said, I would always have him in the game because he does so much more,” Cousy said. “He does intangible things. With guys who played with his intensity, you just can’t measure the effect that has on the other four people. So I could have been reluctant to let him go.”

Now, the Memphis Grizzlies will be on the receiving end of those intangible plays that Smart is capable of. He has a very transparent role on the team, to be what Dillon Brooks was but even more of a leader.
