Chargers News: Bolt Tap USC Running Backs Coach for Coaching Role

The Bolts didn't go too far to secure their new running back's coach.

The new hires for the Los Angeles Chargers and head coach Jim Harbaugh keep coming.

Harbaugh's staff comes from all different places, as they've searched far and wide for the right pieces. However, they didn't need to search too far for this running backs coach.

Chargers reported Fernando Ramirez said the Bolts have announced the hire of their new running backs coach, Kiel McDonald.

McDonald was the former USC running back coach. He just needs to travel a few miles west to Sofi Stadium from the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

Coach McDonald spent last season at USC. Prior to that, he was the running backs coach at Utah from 2017 to 2021. The new Bolts RB coach has a knack for highlighting and developing talent.

At USC, he led the likes of Travis Dye to an All-Pac-12 Second-Team selection, coached MarShawn Lloyd and helped him average 7.1 yards per carry, and Austin Jones, who was solid under McDonald.

The Chargers could look slightly different in the backfield when the 2024 season kicks off. Nonetheless, McDonlad will be tasked to lead this unit to new heights with possibly different faces. He will be under offensive coordinator Greg Roman and his run-first mentality.

These two should get along just fine. The Bolts have themselves another great hire under their belt.
