Former Steelers, Chargers FB Derek Watt Announces Retirement from NFL

Veteran fullback Derek Watt announced Tuesday on social media that he is retiring from the NFL, ending a seven-season pro career.

“It is with great honor that I officially announce my retirement and end to my career. A career that ended up being about so much more than just the game that I love,” Watt wrote in a statement. “The seven years, with two great organizations, 110 career games, and lifelong friendships and memories that I’ve been fortunate enough to make have been nothing short of amazing.”

Watt, the middle brother of one of the NFL’s most famous families, played fullback at Wisconsin and was drafted by the then-San Diego Chargers in the sixth round of the 2016 NFL draft. After four seasons with the Bolts, Watt joined younger brother T.J. with the Pittsburgh Steelers for three seasons between 2020 and ’22.

Watt didn’t play in the NFL last season, making the 2022 season his last in the league. He becomes the second Watt to retire, as J.J. walked away last year, making T.J. the only Watt brother still in the NFL.

In Derek Watt’s statement, he thanked a variety of people who helped him in his career, including both of his brothers.

“From playing in the backyard, to sharing a field in the NFL, this journey together has been absolutely incredible,” Watt wrote. “You both pushed me to be the best that I could be and it’s been so special to see all the hard work that we put in and the sacrifices that we made pay off!”

Watt ends his career having played in 110 NFL games, totaling 47 touches for 249 yards from scrimmage three total touchdowns and countless blocks.
