Chargers News: Insider Details Michigan Contract Bolts Will Have To Compete With For Jim Harbaugh
The Los Angeles Chargers are trying to land their head coach hire, and only one coach fits the bill perfectly: Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh. Harbaugh and the Chargers have been linked to each other for some time now, and it seems like it's only a matter of time before they land him in LA.
However, it's not set in stone. The Michigan Wolverines are doing all they can to retain their national champion-winning head coach. According to Yahoo columnist Dan Wetzel, as reported by NFL insider Don Kleiman, these are the details on Jim's potential Michigan extension contract details.
Michigan will not let go of their head coach that easily, and we don't blame them one bit. Harbaugh is arguably the best coach in this search cycle, and he's led the Wolverines to new heights. He's brought Michigan back to begin college football elites, and they intend to stay that way.
However, the Bolts want to be the NFL's elite team, and Harbaugh is the right fit. He's done it with the Stanford Cardinal, the San Francisco 49ers, and Michigan, and I believe he could do it with the Bolts. It won't be easy, though, as they have competition for Harbaugh and won't give in that easily.
How bad do the Wolverines want to keep Jim, though? NFL reporter for NFL Network Ian Rapaport said that Michigan offered Harbaugh a contract extension for 10 years, $125 million, in late December. Fast forward a couple of weeks later, and it's now at 6 years, $11.5 million guaranteed per year.
The 60-year-old has spent nine seasons as head coach of his alma mater, leading them to new heights; however, nothing lasts forever, and a call back to the NFL looks like the correct move. He's done all he can for his school; now it's time to move back to the NFL and lead an NFL team with no rich history to establish some of their own for years to come.
It won't be easy, but the Chargers need to get this one right to be the team they want to become.
