Chargers News: LA Front Office's Team-Building Could Be Getting A Lucky Break

This could help the Chargers this offseason.

Your Los Angeles Chargers could be getting a slight break thanks to a potential rise in the salary cap in 2024. Many are expecting the salary cap to be around $243 million in 2024. However, one source says it could be closer to $250 million, per Pro Football Talk.

The Chargers are near the bottom of the NFL in salary cap. They rank fourth-last in salary cap space, with -$35.5 million available, per Over the Cap. The Chargers are also second in the NFL in dead cap money, with $24.5 million reserved for players no longer on the team

While a potential increase of $7 million in the salary cap this season won't negate all of the Chargers' cap issues by any means, it gives them slightly more flexibility heading into the offseason.

Either way, new Chargers general manager Joe Hortiz has his work cut out for him. The Chargers likely won't be able to spend big money on free agents and should prioritize acquiring through the draft for right now.

Hortiz will likely have to make some tough roster decisions as well. The Chargers have invested a lot of money in players like Mike Williams, Keenan Allen, Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack. Allen and Mack are each coming off great seasons, while Williams and Bosa were plagued by injuries in 2023. Hortiz and the Chargers could look into options like restructuring contracts and/or trading one or multiple of these players.

Overall, the Chargers will be undergoing an offseason of change heading into the 2024 season. They've already shaken up their front office and coaching staffs, and will ideally work through their cap issues.
