Nasir Adderley took the NFL world by shock when he took to Instagram and shared the news that he would be retiring from football after playing just three years for the Los Angeles Chargers. The 25-year-old safety had just hit free agency and opted to call it a career and prioritize his health above all else.

Adderley wrote a heartfelt message to the organization and fans of LA along with a graphic that he uploaded to his social media page.

Professional football has been widely regarded as one of the most dangerous sports with the most lingering effects after one notches multiple seasons. There is a reason why there is only 17 games each year as the heavy contact and direct hits can lead to a lot of long-term problems.

"Over the past couple of years I have denied this realization, but I'm finally going to put myself first for once. My health is above anything and everyone around me knows that."

While this caught many people off guard, the support is still very present for Adderley following the announcement of his decision. It's not easy to walk away from the money and the game that he loves but Adderley has made it clear he's thinking beyond all of that.

Former Chargers teammate and safety Derwin James Jr. immediately showed his love for Adderley on Twitter as well.

Fans of the Chargers also replied in Adderley's thread and gave the retired athlete the satisfaction in knowing he has their support even though he won't be suiting up for the franchise anymore.
