Chargers young safety Nasir Adderley has announced his sudden retirement from the NFL. Adderley, 25, has played four seasons in the NFL, but decided to officially call it a career on Thursday. He took to Instagram to make the announcement.

Adderley cited his health and wellbeing as a key reason for the retirement. Here's his full message:

After a period of self reflection, I have decided it's time for me to walk away from the game of football.

Over the past couple of years I have denied this realization, but I'm finally going to put myself first for once. My health is above anything and everyone around me knows that.

Truly over-standing my purpose has given me the confidence knowing I don't belong an employee anymore. My purpose involves spending more time with my loved ones, business ownership and chasing my passion of true liberation.

With that being said, it has been a dream come true to play in the NFL and have the opportunity to play for the Chargers organization. I believe I have yet to scratch the surface of the player I could be, but if it's at the expense of my peace of mind then it's no longer for me.

Through it all I can proudly say I have given this game my all through everything I have endured. It's been a joy to create such amazing relationships and words can't express how much love & gratitude I have for you all.

Adderley was a promising young safety on the Chargers, playing in 15 games in both 2020 and 2021, and 16 games last season. He had a career-high two interceptions last year, and added 62 tackles.

The former second-round draft pick finishes his NFL career with 232 tackles and three interceptions, but feels good about his decision to move on in his career.

While it's sad we won't be seeing Adderley on the field anymore, we wish him the best in whatever is next in his career. This couldn't have been an easy decision for the 25-year-old, so we commend him for doing what he feels is right. Best of luck in the next chapter, Nasir!
