Something needs to change quickly...

One of the biggest things to watch for the Los Angeles Chargers this week against the Dallas Cowboys will be how their secondary will hold up against the Dallas passing attack. Dallas thrives on taking deep shots down the field, and the Bolts have been susceptible to giving up big plays this season.

They will need to limit big plays in this game if they want to come away with the victory. The secondary will need to be ready for the Cowboys offensive weapons, otherwise, it could be a long night for the Bolts.

“Through four weeks, the Chargers ranked 25th in expected points added per play on defense and 28th in defensive points allowed per game. The defensive improvement they were hoping for has not materialized. The biggest reason for this is a weakness that has plagued Staley throughout his Chargers tenure: explosive passing plays, which TruMedia defines as any completion longer than 15 yards.”

Per Daniel Popper of The Athletic

The big play has been a problem for the Bolts over the years, and it has continued this season. It has caused many defensive issues, and it’s something that the team hasn’t really tried to address.

“This season, the Chargers are allowing explosive passes on 15.9 percent of opposing dropbacks. Only the Broncos and Pittsburgh Steelers allowed a higher rate in the first four weeks.”

For the Bolts to take down the Cowboys, something major is going to need to change in this game. They can’t allow Dallas to march down the field with big plays and need to find different ways to counter their offense.

“This has to change if the Chargers are going to stay competitive against some of the offenses they will be defending the rest of this season.”

Per Daniel Popper of The Athletic

After the Cowboys game, the Chargers will face off against the defending champion Kansas City Chiefs. Kansas City also lives on big plays, so the Bolts should look to address this now before it becomes more of an issue for them moving forward.
