Cowboys BREAKING: Zack Martin Gets ‘Common Sense’ Deal, Ends Holdout
FRISCO - The Dallas Cowboys have settled their contract dispute with All-Pro guard Zack Martin, who has staged a holdout as he sought a new contract.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones talked a great deal about an unwillingness to budge. But as NFL Network is first to note, a “common sense” agreement has been reached, and as of Monday, Martin should be en route to Oxnard.
What is that “common sense”? Instead of making $13.5 and $14 million in each of the next two years, he gets a bump up to about $18 million APY - a total two-year raise of $8.5 million.
Martin has been one of the best offensive linemen in the NFL over the past decade, with six All-Pro selections in nine seasons. Compared to other star guards, such as Chris Lindstrom (Atlanta Falcons) and Quentin Nelson (Indianapolis Colts) who both make around $20 million a year, Martin was arguing that he's underpaid at just $13.5 million per year.
One view of the holdout as the mandatory fines were about to reach $1 million: He signed his latest extension in 2018, while every guard with a higher annual value signed theirs in 2021 or later. At the time he signed his deal, Martin was rightfully the highest-paid guard in football.
Instead comes a compromise … and an All-Pro solution to Dak Prescott’s line.
