2024 NFL Mock Draft: Big QB Surprises Highlight New 1st-Round Projection

This updated first-round projection for the 2024 NFL Draft features multiple quarterback picks that would raise some eyebrows.

Every year, the NFL Draft conversation is driven by the top quarterback prospects, and this year's class is sure to be no exception.

But where will this year's big names at the game's most important position come off the board?

In the latest 2024 NFL mock draft from CBS Sports, five quarterbacks come off the board in the first round, including each of the first three selections.

USC's Caleb Williams kicks things off at the No. 1 pick to the Chicago Bears, but the surprises start at the No. 2 spot, where the Washington Commanders opt for LSU's Jayden Daniels over North Carolina's Drake Maye.

While Maye has long been the consensus No. 2 quarterback prospect in this class, Daniels made huge strides last season, showing off improved ability as a passer to go along with his electrifying speed as a runner, all on his way to winning the Heisman Trophy.

North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye

Drake Maye could be the third quarterback off the board.

Maye doesn't have to wait long to hear his name called, though, landing with the New England Patriots at the No. 3 slot.

The next passer off the board is Michigan's J.J. McCarthy, who heads to the Las Vegas Raiders at No. 13, followed by another big surprise at the No. 26 pick, where the Tampa Bay Buccaneers make Washington's Michael Penix Jr. their first-round selection.

While Baker Mayfield is technically a free agent, he's expected to return to the Bucs on a new contract. Penix is from the Tampa area, and while a homecoming would be a fantastic new chapter in his incredible football journey, it's one that would only happen if Tampa Bay doesn't bring back Mayfield on a new extension.
