Giants Hold Steady in Latest MMQB Power Ranking Poll

Giants are quickly defining who they are as a team.

Despite losing Sunday night against the Buffalo Bills, the New York Giants are holding steady in the weekly MMQB power ranking poll.

The Giants remain 26th out of 32 teams, the same ranking they held last week. Rather than focus on any positives that came from the game against the Bills, including not getting blown out as so many thought might be the case and holding a lead for three-quarters of the game despite a major brain blip by Giants quarterback Tyrod Taylor at the end of the first half of the game, Conor Orr had a different kind of takeaway about the game.

There will be a larger forum to address this, but I don’t see many teams in a better position to capitalize on the trade deadline than the Giants. That’s really my takeaway from Sunday night’s loss to the Bills. We can talk about a backup quarterback not realizing he shouldn’t check to a run play with no timeouts in a must-score situation. Still, the reality is that they are stockpiled with players who could be desirable last-minute pieces on contending rosters and who are not young enough to be part of the eventual rebuild. More on that later this week.

Indeed, the next two weeks before the October 31 trade deadline will be huge in the land of the Giants. This is a team that, thanks to its upstart last year, had a lot of people expecting way more for Year 2 of the Joe Schoen-Brian Daboll tenure than, in retrospect, wasn't realistic.

This team is still rebuilding, as evidenced by its commitment to youth and its willingness to let the contracts of established veterans such as cornerback Adoree' Jackson and defensive lineman Leonard Williams run out.

The results haven't been pretty, as the Giants have mostly been outmatched this season, but what has finally clicked (we hope) for this team is that they've found some bite that was missing in their first four losses. In these games, the Giants looked lifeless and hapless--like they didn't belong on the same field as their opponent.

But against the Bills, the Giants finally showed a pulse by keeping it competitive against one of the league's better teams. If they can continue on that path for the remainder of the season, who knows what the future may bring?
