Giants Continue Sliding Down MMQB Power Ranking Poll

No surprise, as the Giants have looked flat and lifeless.

The New York Giants might have hit rock bottom in the eyes of their fans, but as far as MMQB's weekly power ranking poll, they're not quite there just yet.

This week's poll has the Giants, who were dismantled by the Miami Dolphins Sunday by a score of 31-16, have dropped from No. 25 last week to No. 26 this week, with only the Vikings, Cardinals, Raiders, Bears, Broncos and Panthers saving them from that crashing thud at No. 32.

Notes Conor Orr of this week's ranking:

There isn’t much to say at this point about the Giants other than we’re teetering on lost season territory. I would say this: If they cannot come out of the year building Kayvon Thibodeaux into an elite, every-down threat, and if they cannot come out of the year with Evan Neal feeling confident enough to anchor one side of the line consistently, then it’s going to be all the more difficult for the Giants to compete in 2024. I think they’re up to the task, but this slump has been concerning. I did see some solid moments from Neal, and some notable aggression on some run blocking downs. I do think he’s become “that guy” and is getting crushed for most offensive line mistakes.

The bottom line is that very few players on this current Giants roster have played well, but none more so than the offensive line, which, thanks to injuries, has seen four guards--five if you believe right tackle Evan Neal is a guard--try to unsuccessfully create a wall of human blockers for quarterback Daniel Jones.

That, plus the absence of Saquon Barkley to take some of the pressure off Daniel Jones and the growing pains by the young defensive secondary, have led to the Giants being where they should have been this time last year in the first of the Brian Daboll-Joe Schoen tenure.

If there is any good news on the horizon for the Giants, it's that they could be getting running back Saquon Barkley back soon. Also, the brutal part of their schedule ends this weekend when they play the fourth of their five scheduled primetime games this season, this one coming up at Buffalo.

But right now, this Giants team hasn't exactly given its fan base much hope, not with its flat, uninspiring play that has been littered with errors and which has people more and more convinced that last year was a mirage. Head coach Brian Daboll has stuck with the same message about working to get better, but the results haven't shown up after five games, making one wonder if they ever will.
