What Happened on Giants' Last Play of the First Half?

Poor clock management thwarted the Giants' chance to come up with three points they would later need.

The New York Giants surprised the world by keeping things close with the Buffalo Bills on Sunday night. And while the Giants ultimately lost the game in the end. 14-9, things might have gone very differently were it not for an odd ending to the first half of the game.

To recap, the Giants had the ball at the Bills' 1-yard line with 14 seconds left and a chance to increase their 6-0 lead by running at least two more plays.

Instead of passing the ball to the end zone, where an incompletion would have stopped the clock, the Giants inexplicably decided to hand the ball off to Saquon Barkley, who was denied entry to the end zone as time expired in the half.

So what exactly happened? How could the Giants have made such a boneheaded decision?

According to head coach Brian Daboll, quarterback Tyrod Taylor, in for the injured Daniel Jones, was alerted that the ball had to be thrown in that situation. However, Taylor, who audibled out of a passing play, thought he would have enough time to spike the ball if a running play failed.

He was wrong and took responsibility for the decision after the game. "Ultimately should’ve left the okay on, shouldn’t have alerted it,” Taylor said. “It was a decision that, looking back on it, I definitely shouldn’t have made.”

Because the Giants couldn't come up with at least three points, given how the game flowed after that, New York was forced to go for a touchdown in the second half to have a chance at winning. They could have won the game on a field goal if they scored the three points at the end of the first half.
