Mayfield Considering Rams Return as Backup Quarterback?

Baker Mayfield could return to the Los Angeles Rams this offseason and serve as the backup quarterback to Matthew Stafford.

Could the Los Angeles Rams bring back Baker Mayfield for the 2023 season? "All options are on the table," according to a report by Tony Pauline of Pro Football Network.

"Once [Aaron] Rodgers and [Derek] Carr are settled on where they will be playing this season, the situation with Mayfield will take shape," Pauline said. "Members of Mayfield's team told me Wednesday night they intend on surveying the landscape once the big two quarterbacks firm their plans. All options are on the table, including Mayfield resigning with the Rams in a backup role."

If the plan in the Mayfield camp is to wait for two of the "biggest fish in the pond" to decide first, then the Rams should have an opportunity to re-sign the former No. 1 overall pick.

Mayfield signed with the Rams after he was waived mid-season by the Carolina Panthers. And despite finishing with a 2-3 record as the starting quarterback for the Rams, it could be argued that his time in Los Angeles was a relative success.

Mayfield brought excitement to a team amid a disappointing season, which has positioned him to find his next long-term home.

While a return to Los Angeles would see the former Oklahoma Sooner serve as the backup to Matthew Stafford, it could be a good opportunity to grow and develop behind the scenes before potentially taking over as Stafford's successor if the 35-year-old retires in the near future,

Or Mayfield could use his experience on the sidelines as preparation for a starting job elsewhere as Mitchell Trubisky did in 2021 when he played behind Buffalo Bills' Josh Allen before signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers the following offseason.
