Door Opens for Steelers to Add Justin Field

Kenny Pickett's departure now makes it possible for the Pittsburgh Steelers to land Justin Fields.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers have moved on from their first-round quarterback, sending Kenny Pickett to the Philadelphia Eagles for a few pick swaps. The trade ends the two-year career in Pittsburgh for the former Pitt star, and begins a new chapter at quarterback for the black and gold.

Russell Wilson appears to be the starter this season, but what comes next? The Steelers only signed the nine-time Pro Bowler to a one-year deal, leaving them dry after 2024 at the position.

So, once again, the door has been opened for the team to acquire Justin Fields from the Chicago Bears.

The trade value for Fields is dropping by the day, and with no suitors to this point, the Steelers may have lucked out in landing the Bears quarterback late in the offseason.

With an added third-round pick, the Steelers could likely make something happen, sending a mid-round selection to Chicago in exchange for Fields, who would become Wilson's backup.

If the Steelers were looking for Wilson to mentor Pickett, why not do the same with Fields? Mike Tomlin loved him coming out of Ohio State, and if he's worth nothing more than a fourth-round pick, it may be an easy call for general manager Omar Khan to make.

Few would think the Steelers' quarterback room would include Wilson and Fields - and no Pickett - this season, but the door is now open. If Pittsburgh wants to strike at a young quarterback with potential, they have an opportunity to do so.
