Insider Believes Steelers Hire Matt Canada Replacement This Offseason

The Pittsburgh Steelers could bring in their next offensive coordinator before the season.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers are sticking with Matt Canada as offensive coordinator this season, but that doesn't mean he's around long-term. Entering the final year of his deal, there's nothing guaranteeing him to the team more than the 2023 season, and one insider believes the next OC could be hired this spring.

The Athletic's Mark Kaboly was asked about hiring Byron Leftwich to a Brian Flores-like role this season to help Canada and the offense. He believes that's certainly an option for the Steelers, and could be their answer to replacing Canada if he doesn't meet their expectations this upcoming year.

"I think there is a legitimate chance. Leftwich played here, Tomlin loves him and Canada is in the final year of his contract. A coordinator-in-waiting on the staff seems to be what Tomlin likes with Teryl Austin and Canada hired and eventually being promoted," Kaboly wrote.

The Steelers did have Teryl Austin and Canada on the roster before promoting them, and team president Art Rooney did allude to risking an outside hire for a reason to keep Canada.

Pittsburgh might believe Canada is their guy moving forward, but if there's any uncertainty, hiring someone like Leftwich to the staff makes sense for the long term.
