Russell Wilson Getting Familiar With Steelers WRs

The Pittsburgh Steelers new quarterback is already working with his pass-catchers.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers new offense is starting to connect as pass-catchers and quarterback Russell Wilson got together to workout and begin preparing for the 2024 season ahead of OTAs and mini camp.

Tight end Pat Freiermuth confirmed on Around the 412 Podcast that he, Calvin Austin and Van Jefferson met up with Wilson in Southern California to begin working. Freiermuth also said that he's been working on improving his blocking, and with extra time to adjust to Wilson, he should take a step forward in the offensive attack this season.

The fourth-year tight end is coming off a 12-game season where he caught just 32 passes for 308 yards. The offenisve gameplan never favored Freiermuth as Matt Canada's play-calling typically avoided the middle of the field. Add in some questionable quarteback play and there wasn't a real shot for the second-round pick to emerge until this season.

With Wilson and Just Fields, the hope is that Freiermuth becomes a star within the receiving core. And if he's improving his blocking as well, he should be a well-rounded member of the playbook.

Hopefully the extra work with Austin and Jefferson help them emerge as well.
