The Pittsburgh Steelers find themselves in familiar territory ahead of Spring Training: awaiting a decision from veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Pittsburgh is set to enter a new era under head coach Mike McCarthy, with many believing Rodgers could return to join his former head coach for one final season.

Despite the plethora of questions at the quarterback position, the team has worked to uplift the existing group of Will Howard, Mason Rudoplph and third-round pick Drew Allar with support out wide. Pittsburgh bolstered its receiving corps with the addition of Michael Pittman Jr. in a trade with the Indianapolis Colts back in March, pairing him alongside DK Metcalf.

Though the team brought in Pittman to compliment Metcalf, the acquisition raised questions over the two-time Pro Bowler’s long-term future in Pittsburgh. Metcalf and the Steelers’ passing attack endured a turbulent 2025 campaign, but ultimately emerged as the team’s best since the days of Ben Roethlisberger.

Still, Metcalf could draw immense interest in the trade market ahead of the 2026 season, with teams finding themselves in need of wideout help. Monitoring potential suitors, the Washington Commanders could benefit greatly from the addition of Metcalf. Let’s look at a potential trade to send Metcalf to Washington:

Pittsburgh receives Mike Sainristil, 2027 third-round pick

Washington receives DK Metcalf, 2027 fifth-round pick

In the proposed deal, the Steelers front office leans into its identity with another move to bolster the defensive side of the ball. Metcalf is dealt to the Commanders for third-year cornerback Mike Sainristil and a day-two pick in next year’s draft. The Steelers ultimately send a fifth-rounder to Washington to sweeten the deal.

From a fantasy football perspective, Metcalf’s stock could make a significant rise with a move to Washington. He’d join Terry McLaurin and Jayden Daniels in a far more explosive passing attack, catering to his ability to stretch the field through the air. I’d expect him to garner over 100 targets in a superior offense, which should help him eclipse 1,000 yards for the first time since 2023.

Why The Steelers Make The Trade

It could hurt Pittsburgh’s offense to lose a contributor of Metcalf’s caliber in the passing game, but with Howard or Allar potentially set to take the helm under center, the team could set its focus on an established culture predicated on the run game and defensive output. Adding Mike Sainristil shores up Pittsburgh’s secondary, forming one of the top cornerback tandems in the NFL alongside Joey Porter Jr. The team’s secondary struggled mightily at times a season ago, and could bounce back as one of the top units in the league with the proposed deal.

The Commanders have seemingly found a franchise corner in Trey Amos, but noticed inconsistency from Sainristil following an alignment transition, moving inside following the addition of Amos. Though his ability is undeniable, the team could afford to expend such an asset to add a consistent difference-maker alongside Daniels and McLaurin. Washington can bolster a position of need in a big way, forming a long-term pairing at wide receiver with Daniels set to enter his third season after an injury-riddled 2025 campaign.
