Pirates Make Bold Konnor Griffin Decision After Five Triple-A Games

In this story:
The Konnor Griffin era has officially begun in Pittsburgh.
The Pittsburgh Pirates are set to call up the 19-year-old shortstop ahead of the team's first home game of the season, according to multiple reports, including ESPN's Jeff Passan. The Pirates posted a simple 13-second video on social media on Thursday, showing Griffin putting on a Pittsburgh hat with the caption "Opening Debut." The post already has over 1.7 million views on X, formerly known as Twitter, at the time of publication. Pittsburgh is yet to announce a corresponding move to get the young shortstop on the big league roster, however.
Griffin, MLB Pipeline's No. 1 overall prospect for 2026, had seven hits in 41 at-bats this spring. Despite four of those seven spring training hits being home runs, the Pirates decided to have their top prospect open the season at Triple-A. But in just five games with the Indianapolis Indians, the young shortstop went 7-for-16 with three doubles, three stolen bases, and four runs scored. That was seemingly enough for Pittsburgh to pull the trigger on calling him up to the majors.
More Konnor Griffin news could be coming soon

Even though Griffin doesn't turn 20 until later this month, expectations are sky high for the young shortstop. In just 127 minor league games since being drafted, the 2024 first-round pick has 168 hits, 21 homers, 95 RBIs, and 68 stolen bases. With that explosive combination of power and speed, it's no wonder the Pirates are reportedly trying to act quickly and sign their top prospect to a long-term deal.
ESPN's Buster Olney reported on Wednesday that Pittsburgh and Griffin are "deep into negotiations" over an eight-year extension worth anywhere from $100 million to $130 million. It initially seemed like the two parties might reach an agreement before Griffin's highly anticipated big league debut, similar to the Seattle Mariners signing minor leaguer Colt Emerson to an eight-year, $95 million deal on Tuesday. But Pittsburgh is "quietly confident" it can also announce an extension with Griffin before the Pirates' home opener, according to MLB insider Jim Bowden.
Either way, Griffin is now expected to be in Pittsburgh's lineup when the Pirates face off against the Baltimore Orioles on Friday.
