2026 AUSL Pitcher of the Year’s Season Cut Short Due To Injury

A lower-body injury will keep Montana Fouts out for the remainder of the season, prompting a roster change by Team Klinger for the AUSL All-Star Cup.

Professional softball will be without one of its top pitchers for the remainder of the 2026 season.

Utah Talons pitcher Montana Fouts is out for the rest of the Athletes Unlimited Softball League season with a lower-body injury. Oklahoma City Spark pitcher Maya Johnson will replace Fouts on Team Klingler's roster for week two of the AUSL All-Star Cup.

The injury brings an end to a standout season for Fouts, who was named the 2026 AUSL Pitcher of the Year after leading the league with seven wins, seven complete games and 63 strikeouts during the regular season. The Utah Talons ace finished 7-4 with a 2.36 ERA while holding opposing hitters to a .200 batting average.

Fouts entered the All-Star Cup coming off her strongest AUSL regular season to date. After posting a 2.71 ERA across 31 innings for the Talons in 2025, she more than doubled her workload in 2026 and cemented herself as the centerpiece of Utah's pitching staff.

Her absence leaves Team Klinger without the kind of star power they had hoped to use against its rivals. Fouts had initially been selected alongside Georgina Corrick, Lexi Kilfoyl and Sam Landry as part of the team's pitching staff.

Johnson now gets another opportunity in the circle after completing her first AUSL regular season.

The former Belmont University standout entered the professional ranks as the No. 3 overall pick in the 2026 AUSL College Draft after the Bruins went 41-13. Johnson pitched an impressive 215.2 innings, racking up a .78 ERA during her senior season. She struck out 397 batters and threw three no-hitters on her way to earning First-Team All-America honors and the 2026 Softball America Pitcher of the Year title.

Her transition to the professional level has been less smooth. Johnson had a 3-5 record for the Spark during the 2026 regular season, a 4.88 ERA and allowed 55 hits across 43 innings.

Now Johnson will step into the spot left by one of the league's most productive pitchers.

For Team Klinger, the move provides another arm for a pitching staff that is stacked with talent. For Johnson, week two presents another chance to establish herself at the professional level just months after completing one of the most dominant collegiate pitching careers in recent memory.

Fout's injury, meanwhile, ends a 2026 campaign in which she established herself as the AUSL's top pitcher, earning her multiple recognitions and awards.
