Orioles starter Bud Norris rips Jon Singleton's deal with Astros

Astros prospect Jon Singleton, who is making his MLB debut Tuesday night, signed a five-year, $10 million deal with Houston on Monday, becoming the first player to sign a multi-year, multi-million-dollar extension before his big league debut.

Orioles starter Bud Norris was critical of the 22-year-old's deal on Twitter on Tuesday.

Others have also criticized the deal, believing Singleton potentially sacrificed future earnings. He took immediate financial security rather than believing in his talent and cashing in via free agency or arbitration, they say.

Singleton's deal could be worth up to $30 million over eight years because of club options, meaning he can't be a free agent until he's 30. Singleton had been on a one-year deal worth $500,000 while he was in the major leagues.

Former big league starter Mark Mulder was also critical of the deal on Twitter.

Singleton was suspended 50 games last season for a second violation for substance abuse, which he said was for marijuana. He spent a month in rehab last year.

Singleton had a .941 OPS in 54 games for Triple-A Oklahoma City this season.
