Mexico will be without perhaps its most in-form player when it takes on the United States next Wednesday in Arizona.
Santos Laguna forward Oribe Peralta was not among the 18 players called up by manager Miguel Herrera Thursday for the April 2 friendly at University of Phoenix Stadium, left off the roster for personal reasons, according to the Mexican federation (FMF). Experienced Chivas Guadalajara forward Aldo de Nigris was not called in either, leaving a likely strike tandem of Alan Pulido and Raul Jimenez to start against the Americans next week.
The 30-year-old Peralta has scored five goals in his last seven games in all competitions for Santos Laguna and scored five goals in Mexico's two-game playoff series against New Zealand to cement El Tri's place in the World Cup.
Leon midfielder Jose Juan Vasquez was also not able to join Mexico, because of a visa issue, according to the FMF. Teammate and Mexico captain Rafa Marquez, however, will grace the field and don the armband as Mexico looks to win back some bragging rights after behind held to a home scoreless draw and falling again 2-0 in Columbus during the CONCACAF Hexagonal.
Despite their clubs being involved in the CONCACAF Champions League semifinals that conflict with the non-FIFA-date match, Cruz Azul's Marco Fabian and Rogelio Alfredo Chavez and Toluca's Alfredo Talavera, Miguel Angel Ponce and Isaac Brizuela were called upon.
Because the game falls on a non-FIFA date, European-based players were not considered, meaning the likes of Javier Hernandez, Giovani dos Santos, Andres Guardado, Diego Reyes and Hector Herrera will not take part.
Here is Mexico's squad in full:
GOALKEEPERS: Alfredo Talavera (Toluca), Moises Munoz (America)
