Chelsea captain John Terry has signed a one-year deal to stay in Stamford Bridge for the 2016–17 season, the team announced Wednesday.

The deal ends speculation that Terry, 35, would leave Chelsea this summer after 22 years with the club. In January, Terry said that the club did not plan on offering him a new contract, although he wants to keep playing.

“I am delighted to sign a new contract with the club. Everyone knows I'm Chelsea through and through,” Terry said after signing the deal.

“I am looking forward to next season under the new manager and hopefully we can make it a successful one.”

Terry has made 703 first-team appearances with Chelsea since being signed at the age of 14. He holds the club record for most games played as captain (570).
