Real Madrid’s injury misfortune has known no bounds this season with setback after setback causing nightmares for Xabi Alonso.

The Real Madrid manager has not only had to battle big egos and overwhelming pressure, but a constant stream of ailments across his squad. Unfortunately for the Spanish coach, another fitness issue has appeared on the eve of the new year.

Kylian Mbappé is the latest star to enter the treatment room and the club’s talismanic center forward will be sorely missed in Spain’s capital given Madrid’s overreliance on his goals. During a crunch period for Alonso, such an absence could prove fatal.

Here’s the latest injury news regarding Madrid’s goalscoring dynamo.

The results of a recent MRI scan have revealed a ligament damage in Mbappé’s left knee, as per reports—an issue the 27-year-old has been battling for several matches. Instead of going under the knife, he’s simply expected to recuperate on the sidelines.

Madrid have since confirmed the striker’s injury but simply stated that he had sprained his knee, with no specific mention of ligament damage. The club’s statement did not reveal the expected length of absence, but the World Cup winner is set for a stint on the treatment table.

Reports suggests that Mbappé’s knee issue is not particularly serious but will still sideline him for at least three weeks. With games coming thick and fast in January, that means he will miss a minimum of five matches and potentially six.

A return date can be lightly penciled in for Jan. 25 when Madrid visit Villarreal in La Liga, but he’s certain to miss the Spanish Super Cup. Los Blancos face Atlético Madrid in the competition’s semifinal on Jan. 8 and will be aiming to set up a clash with Athletic Club or Barcelona in the final three days later.

Mbappé will also miss league meetings with Real Betis and Levante, the Copa del Rey round of 16 and the penultimate round of league phase fixtures in the Champions League.

With pressure rising on Alonso in the hot seat and the team’s form in January considered crucial to his future, Mbappé’s injury is the worst news possible. He’s scored a staggering 29 times across all competitions for the Spanish giants this season despite several months of difficulties at the Santiago Bernabéu.
