Sunderland loanee bags player of the month award
Sunderland midfielder Jay Matete has won the player of the month award for his first month at Plymouth Argyle.
Matete joined the Pilgrims last month, making his debut from the bench for the League One leaders in a 0-0 draw at Bolton Wanderers on January 7.
He has started each of the subsequent three games, though, and he impressed fans sufficiently to be voted their player of the month.
"I've enjoyed my first month here, it's been really good. We've picked up some great results on the way," Matete said.
"I'm delighted to have won the award. I just want to kick on now - it would be nice to win some more Player of the Month awards, but most important hopefully we keep winning games."
Matete won more than a third of the 1,127 votes with 35.9% going to the midfielder. That was enough to narrowly beat goalkeeper Mike Cooper, who got 34%.
