Luton defender Tom Lockyer says he would be in ‘serious trouble’ if he said what he really felt about the penalty Sunderland were awarded last week.

Amari’I Bell was adjudged to have pulled down Amad Diallo in the box just minutes from time at the Stadium of Light.

After what appeared to be a consultation with his assistant, referee Scott Oldham awarded the penalty, and Amad duly equalised to earn Sunderland a 1-1 draw.

Luton boss Rob Edwards was unhappy with the penalty award after the game, and even Tony Mowbray appeared to describe it as a ‘bad decision,’ albeit one he was happy to accept in his favour – especially after a plethora of recent costly refereeing mistakes that have hurt Sunderland.

Hatters defender Lockyer though went a little further in his reaction, leaving everyone in little doubt about just how poor he thought it was.

“I wish I could tell you exactly how I feel, but everyone knows you’re not allowed to do that nowadays, so yes, if you haven’t seen it, please watch it back,” Lockyer said.

“If I say any more, I run the risk of getting in serious trouble, which is a shame because the lads put in a massive effort.

“It was one of those days where we weren’t at it 100 per cent. There was a few leggy boys there, it’s been a really tough period, there’s been a lot of games and when we get in those positions, going 1-0 up, we tend to hang on really unless something happens.

“So yes – it’s hugely disappointing, I’ve seen it back, everyone’s seen it back.”
