Sunderland will move for Liam Millar to replace Jack Clarke in the summer, according to new reports.

Canadian forward Millar is enjoying a strong season on loan at Preston and he was certainly impressive when they visited the Stadium of Light on New Year’s Day.

The 24-year-old appears to be well out of favour at Basle, who he joined in 2021 from Liverpool, and they will likely want to cash in on him this summer.

Journalist Alan Nixon claims Sunderland have identified him as a replacement for Clarke, who is almost certainly not going to with the Black Cats next season unless promotion to the Premier League is achieved.

It’s not the first time that Millar has been linked with Sunderland. There were strong rumours of him joining in 2018 with him initially playing for the under-21s, but that move never materialised.

“He's a goalscorer,” former Liverpool under-18s manager Neil Critchley said in 2016. “What I like about him is he can run down the side of defenders, he runs in behind, he gives them real problems with his movement and he's a good finisher off both feet.

“He's got a good brain, good awareness, very calm and can finish. He's a good player, a good all round player.”
