The MLB season has now entered its second week. Fans and collectors have gotten an early glimpse of heralded rookies including JJ Wetherholt of the St. Louis Cardinals who broke camp with the team. Wetherholt has already gotten off to a strong start with the Cardinals while also generating buzz amongst collectors. However, there was one top prospect whose name was absent from the list of rookies making their big league debut. That player was consensus number one overall prospect Konnor Griffin of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Griffin had rocketed up prospect ranking sites last year after an impressive spring training in 2025 and an even better professional debut. Unlike the previously mentioned Wetherholt, Griffin made his Topps product debut in Bowman Draft 2025 where his first chrome auto quickly rose to one of the tip chases in the product. After his superlative debut, the 19 year old phenom continued that run in spring training this year and with many talent evaluators and collectors wondering if he would make his debut this season.

The debate ended when the Pirates announced that Griffin would start the year at triple A where he proceeded to look unchallenged. During his time at triple A, Griffin crushed the ball  hitting .438/.571/.625 with three doubles and three stolen bases in 21 plate appearances. However, after just five games the Pirates announced that Griffin would make his MLB debut in time for the home opener.

What This Means for Collectors

If you were one of the lucky fans and collectors who got on the Konnor Griffin bandwagon early, his call up only means good things for you and your collection’s value. Prior to his callup, Griffin was one of the hottest cards on the market. For example, true blue Bowman Draft First Chrome autos were selling for over $3000 while graded PSA 10 first autos were selling for $1000. As is the case with many prospects, collectors should expect those sales to increase with his impending big league debut making it a good time to sell if you are so inclined. On the other hand, if you’re someone like me who believes in Griffin’s potential, you wouldn’t be faulted for hanging onto your Griffin cards as he might just be scratching the surface of his potential.
