Crimson Tide leaves Texas undefeated following convincing 5-0 win Sunday

Alabama soccer rolled through its second road test of the season, defeating non-conference opponent Lamar, 5-0, on Sunday.

The game seemed to be over before it even began with the Crimson Tide finding the back of the net three times within the opening 16 minutes. 

Redshirt sophomore Gabby Duca opened the scoring at the 5-minute mark, on a shot assisted by freshman forward Carly Wyatt.

 Two minutes later, Casey Wertz doubled Alabama’s advantage before Kat Rogers added the third in the 16th.

The second half was much like the first, with Alabama creating chance after chance, converting two more en route to the shutout. 

Freshman Carlee Giammona scored a penalty to find her name on the scoresheet for the first time in her young career, followed by Riley Mattingly in the 82nd minute, finishing off an assist from Wertz.

“Today was a great way to end our weekend in Texas,” Crimson Tide coach Wes Hart said in a release. “Two wins against quality opponents that will win their fair share of games this year. 

"I loved our energy to start the game. We jumped on them early and never looked back. It was great to see five different players score goals today, and several players saw their first action of the season. We are in a good place right now heading into a very difficult challenge at Virginia Tech.”

The Crimson Tide  outshot the Cardinals 34-7, placing 22 of those efforts on target. It also had an overwhelming advantage in corners (9-1). With the win, goalkeeper Alex Plavin recorded her second clean sheet of the season.

The Crimson Tide will be on the road again next weekend when it visits Virginia Tech in Blacksburg on Thursday and Chattanooga on Sunday.
