• Two days after he tied the course record at Medinah, and a day after it was broken by someone else, Justin Thomas topped it with an 11-under-par record 61 during the third round of the BMW Championship. He’ll head into the final round with a six shot lead over Tony Finau and Patrick Cantlay. “This golf course, when I played here on Tuesday for the first time, I was almost convinced a single digit (score) was going to win,” Finau said. “… If you would have told me somebody would shoot 61 this week, I would have told you that’s a joke.”
• The Alabama soccer pulled off its second exhibition shutout, defeating South Alabama 4-0 at the Alabama Soccer Stadium. The Crimson Tide scored every goal during a 14-minute span in the second half, by freshman Macy Clem, sophomore Riley Mattingly, junior Casey Wertz and junior Taylor Morgan.
• Former Alabama golfer Stephanie Meadow posted a six-under par round of 67, and at -10 will take a four-stroke lead into the final day of the ISPS Handa World Invitational at Galgorm Castle Golf Club in Ireland. “People I grew up playing junior golf with were all here today and that was really nice,” she said. “I wasn’t super nervous or anything, just trying to take it in and enjoy it because I’ll not be able to compete at home very often. It’s a home game and I’ll just enjoy it.”
• Damien Harris had a big-time performance for the Patriots against the Titans in his NFL preseason debut, with 80 rushing yards on 14 carries and four catches for 23 yards.
• Philadelphia Phillies reliever David Robertson had Tommy John surgery on Thursday
• Pitcher Taylor Guilbeau made his Major League debut for the Seattle Mariners.
• Crimson Tide outfielder Tyler Gentry led the Brewster Whitecaps of the Cape Cod summer league in doubles with 11 and ranked second in RBIs at 22. The senior played in 44 games and also had 17 runs, 10 walks and three stolen bases.
• The U-19 Women’s National Team won the Softball World Cup with a 4-3 comeback victory against Japan. On the team were Alabama players Montana Fouts and Skylar Wallace, and signees Lexi Kilfoy and Bailey Dowling.

On this date in Crimson Tide history:
August 18, 1986: Alabama defensive tackle Willie Ryles lapsed into a coma after suffering a head injury in a half-speed drill in practice. He suffered a brain clot in his brain and was flown by helicopter to University Hospital in Birmingham, but was pronounced dead five days later.
