Did you notice?

• After losing to Canada on Friday, the U.S. Women’s National Team came back and won twice on Saturday, defeating Puerto Rico 3-1 and then Canada by the same score to capture the gold medal at the Pan American Games in Peru. Former Crimson Tide player Haylie McCleney went 13-for-23 with three home runs to lead the team offensively.

• Former Alabama volleyball player Krystal Rivers did not play for Team USA in its consolation game at the Pan American Games. It defeated Canada 25-16, 25-14, 25-23.

• The final tally of medals for Crimson Tide athletes at the Pan-Am Games:

• The Detroit Tigers were shut out for a sixth time during a game started by Spencer Turnbull this season. His record fell to 3-10.

• Bobby Shelton, who opened the Portland Open with a 61, shot the third round at -3. At -14 for the tournament he’s tied for fifth, four strokes off the lead.

• The games may be over, but the fun didn’t end for the women’s basketball team during its tour of Canada:

On this date in Crimson Tide history:

August 11, 1964: Ohio State's Woody Hayes and USC’s John McKay were guest speakers at the annual University of Alabama Coaching Clinic. Hayes called Alabama coach Paul Bryant "a master at taking average athletes and making them believe they are invincible. I don't know of any coach who instills such an iron resolution in his players." – Bryant Museum

Crimson Tide quote of the day:

“Have a plan, not only for the day, but for the week and the month and the year and ten years from now. Anticipate. Plan. Anticipate every situation that could arise. Don’t think second by second what needs to be done. Have a plan. Follow the plan and you’ll be surprised how successful you can be. Most people don’t plan. That’s why it’s so easy to beat most folks.” – Paul W. “Bear” Bryant
