TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Out with the old, in with the new.

That's what the Alabama Crimson Tide is looking to do on offense this season. The Crimson Tide lost quarterback Bryce Young and offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien this offseason to the NFL.

Now, Alabama is looking for a fresh restart through the eyes of Tommy Rees. The young, talented play-caller comes to Tuscaloosa after three seasons in South Bend with Notre Dame — where he also played quarterback from 2010-2013.

Why would you leave your alma mater?

While it's technically a lateral move — it's not really. Joining the coaching staff under Nick Saban is a big career move — one that usually leads to a head coaching position in the near future.

Rees saw firsthand the difference in talent when the Crimson Tide eliminated his Fighting Irish from the College Football Playoff in 2020-21.

Now, he gets to be a part of it.

Not only is it a fresh start for Rees, but also for Alabama — who struggled at times under O'Brien a season ago.

"I wouldn't say too much is new but it's a lot different," wide receiver Ja'Corey Brooks said. "[Rees] is young — he's got a little more swag."

"I've been here for a while," offensive lineman Darrian Dalcourt said. "A lot of offensive coordinator turnover. Everyone brings a different energy, a different mentality, a different style. But I think we appreciate [Rees] coming in and teaching us some new wrinkles and stuff like that."

Rees' style?

"We'll see when the season starts," Dalcourt said. "Don't want to give away too much."
