The Extra Point: What Happened at Alabama's Last Gymnastics Meet?

The Crimson Tide lost last week against Missouri but is expected to come back strong against Boise State.

Last week, Alabama gymnastics had a rocky meet against Missouri as they lost by 3.25 tenths of a point.

The team was consistently hitting a team all-around score in the upper 197 range, and even was able to a 198 at the Metroplex meet. At this last meet, they got a 196.750.

The gymnasts had a little bit of a rough start on uneven bars. They struggled with technique errors, getting those stuck landings and hitting handstands. Each one of those flaws adds up when the judges are scoring a routine.

Following uneven bars, the team continued to struggle slightly on vault with their landings. It seemed to be that the start of the meet affected their performance on vault which led into floor.

The Crimson Tide had two falls on floor on the same tumbling pass which was a back 1.5 twist into a front layout. That pass is most of the gymnasts' "easy" pass, yet there were still two falls by Mati Waligora and Shania Adams.

Fortunately, the meet was able to be flipped around as Lilly Hudson, Gabby Gladieux, and Luisa Blanco picked up the pace on floor. The pace continued on beam as Blanco was able to receive her third perfect 10.0 score of the season on beam.

While the team had an off meet last week, head coach Ashley Johnston believes that they will learn from their experience and use it as fuel for their next competition against Boise State.

The competition between Alabama and Boise State takes place in Coleman Coliseum on Friday night at 7 p.m. CT and will be aired on the SEC Network+.
