TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Alabama football freshman defensive back Tony Mitchell has been suspended from the team, head coach Nick Saban announced on Monday evening following the team's first practice of the 2023 spring season.

Mitchell was arrested at a traffic stop in Bonifay, Fla., on Wednesday for possession of marijuana with the intent to sell and/or distribute.

"Tony Mitchell has been suspended from the team and all team activities until we gather more information about the situation and what his legal circumstance is," Saban said. "Guys, everybody's got an opportunity to make choices and decisions. There's no such thing in being at the wrong place at the wrong time. You gotta be responsible for who you're with, who you're around and what you do, who you associate yourself with and the situations that you put yourself in.

"So it is what it is but there is cause and effect when you make choices and decisions that put you in bad situations."

According to the Holmes County Sheriff's Office, deputies detected the odor of burnt marijuana coming from the vehicle Mitchell was driving. He produced a baggie of marijuana, and after an additional search of the car a set of scales, a loaded handgun between the passenger seat and center console and a large amount of cash were also found.

His passenger Christopher Lewis was charged with possession of marijuana with the intent to sell and/or deliver and carrying a concealed firearm without a permit. Both were taken to the Holmes County Jail.

The freshman defensive back was a consensus 4-star prospect out of Thompson High School in Alabaster, Alabama and came in at 64th on the SI99 for the class of 2023. He earned a spot in the Under Armour All-America Game.
