Bama in the NFL: Gibbs's big day lifts Lions, Commanders Defenders Fall Short

Jahmyr Gibbs had a big day as the Lions improved to 7-2, other top performances across the NFL.

NFL Week 10 Recap:

  • On Thursday night, the Carolina Panthers lost to the Chicago Bears 16-13. Panthers quarterback Bryce Young completed 21 passes for 185 yards. Young has struggled with the turnover bug this season, and the lack of having any on Thursday was a positive development for the Panthers rookie.
  • The New England Patriots have started the season 2-8, one of their worst starts in franchise history. Mac Jones got benched again, and finished with 170 yards and one interception. The Patriots had a chance at a game-winning drive with backup quarterback Bailey Zappe in the game. Defensively for New England, Anfernee Jennings had seven tackles, Christian Barmore had four and a tackle for loss, and Mack Wilson Sr. had one. Patriots head coach Bill Belichick was asked about the quarterback situation and said, "We'll deal with next week, next week."
  • The Houston Texans are staking their claim as one of the best young teams in the NFL, with DeMeco Ryans's squad upsetting the Cincinnati Bengals 30-27. Christian Harris had five tackles, Will Anderson Jr. had one tackle and two quarterback hits, and Henry To'oTo'o did not suit up (concussion). John Metchie III got involved offensively, catching two passes for 25 yards in the win.
  • The Detroit Lions again appear to be the real deal, beating the Chargers in Los Angeles 41-38. Jahmyr Gibbs had a big day for the Lions, with 77 rushing yards, 35 receiving yards, and two touchdowns. Jameson Williams caught two passes for 18 yards. Defensively, Brian Branch had four tackles.
  • The Washington Commanders' defense had a tough day as a whole, but the defensive line had a strong performance. Daron Payne had five tackles, while Jonathan Allen had four tackles, one sack, and two QB hits. It was not enough though, as the Commanders lost in Seattle, 29-26.

NFL Week 10 Preview:

  • On Thursday, Bryce Young and the Carolina Panthers kick off Week 10 on the road against Chicago. The Bears will benefit from this game regardless of the outcome as they own the Panthers' first-round pick in the next draft. Young is looking to rebound from a losing effort in Week 9 that saw him have three interceptions, including two pick-sixes. The Panthers don't have an easy schedule, but a win at Chicago could be a solid foundation to find some positives during a rough season.
  • Mac Jones and the New England Patriots will kick off NFL Sunday at 8:30 CT in the morning against the Indianapolis Colts in Frankfurt, Germany. The rumblings around Foxborough are that there is a level of discontent between the Patriots' head coach and owner after the Patriots' 2-7 start to the season. Jones and the offense have struggled, but going up against a bottom-10 pass defense in the NFL could jump-start their offense.
  • The Texans' defense is banged up, with Christian Harris, Will Anderson Jr., and Henry To'oTo'o all dealing with injuries. Houston has a tall task this week: stopping Joe Burrow and Cincinnati's passing game. Tacklers like Harris and To'To'o would be useful against a top offense in the NFL, and Anderson would help move Burrow out of the pocket. The Bengals roster two Crimson Tide players offensively, offensive tackle Jonah Williams and tight end Irv Smith Jr., who scored his first touchdown of the season last week.
  • The Washington Commanders' defensive line will have to move Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith out of the pocket before he can find his offensive weapons. Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne will apply pressure on the interior of the defensive line. Jarran Reed for Seattle will be tasked with stopping the run game against Washington's Brian Robinson Jr. A win for Washington will get it to .500 on the season and on the cusp of the NFC wild-card spots.
  • Patrick Surtain II will be the lone Crimson Tide defender on the field for Denver's game against Buffalo due to Kareem Jackson's suspension. The safery is eligible to return in Week 11, but that won't help the Broncos against a stout Bills passing game led by Josh Allen and Stefon Diggs. It's likely that Diggs and Surtain will be matched up on each other. Offensively for Denver, Jerry Jeudy will have to take on an increased role in the Broncos passing game since they're thin at wide receiver.
