Kalen DeBoer On Granting Nick Saban 100% Access: "I would be a fool not to"

In his introductory press conference, new Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer made things clear on Nick Saban's future involvement within the program.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — There's a new head-honcho in charge of the Alabama football program.

On Saturday, former Washington head coach Kalen DeBoer took the podium to address the media for the first time as active head coach of the Crimson Tide, marking a new era of leadership in Tuscaloosa.

Amidst this transition, there is speculation about the future role of legendary head coach, Nick Saban, within the program. As Saban navigates an unforeseen role, questions linger about his continued involvement at Alabama.

For DaBoer, giving Saban full-access to his tenure isn't a hinderance, but a gift.

"He's the best in the business to ever do it," DaBoer said. "I'm just gonna make sure that's all known. That's how I feel. 100% access, okay? To everything. I would be a fool if that wasn't the case. I would be a fool."

As DaBoer continues to get his feet wet, he made it clear that Saban's guidance will be a pivotal part of the Crimson Tide's future.

"I'm going to ask him that he shows up, makes sure that he gives me at least one thing every day," DaBoer said. "I'm sure he's going to have 10, but I'm going to be good with that. At least one thing that he sees, that we could get better at."

While DaBoer has an immediate connection to a coaching legend, the 2023 Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year also fully understands the historical weight of being the head coach at Alabama.

"We have probably more than two [legends] if we really want to talk about it," DaBoer said. "Coach [Paul] Bryant, right? I talked to Coach Saban yesterday he spoke of that. And that right there told me just how humble he is, and how grateful he has been to follow in someone else's shoes and continue to build on what we have here at Alabama."
