TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Since A-Day, Alabama football has lost several players to the transfer portal — now there may be a new cause.

According to Tide Illustrated’s Tony Tsoukalas, Crimson Tide fourth-year defensive lineman Jamil Burroughs’ status with the team is uncertain at this time. The reason behind the discipline is "serious enough to result in the redshirt junior's removal from the program.”

Burroughs reportedly struck assistant strength coach and former Alabama defensive lineman Josh Chapman after an argument surrounding the use of gel pellet guns. Tsoukalas reported that Burroughs and other Crimson Tide players were play-fighting with the toy weapons at Bryant Hall when police were called to the scene — as well as Chapman. The other players involved were cooperative — Burroughs apparently was not, striking Chapman in the process.

Burroughs remains on Alabama’s online roster — the decision is reportedly a 50/50.

Burroughs has been with the Crimson Tide since the beginning of the 2020 season — which resulted in a national championship win over Ohio State. Burroughs didn’t see much of the field until the 2022-23 season when he appeared in 11 games — recording eight tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack and two quarterback hurries. Burroughs was expected to have a larger role on Alabama’s defensive line in 2023-24 after the departure of Byron Young and DJ Dale.

Burroughs is reportedly “not thought to be facing any legal trouble.”
